Some cash, motor licence offices open, but only visit if urgent

18 June 2020

Some of the City of Cape Town’s motor licence and cash offices are open, but customers are advised to only visit the offices in person if urgent or if they cannot make use of the online services that are available. This will help to reduce queues as offices are running on a skeleton staff complement to adhere to the COVID-19 regulations. A grace period is also in effect for those who needed to renew their motor licence but could not do so due to the national lockdown.

The City has been opening its revenue and motor vehicle licencing offices in a phased manner to ensure COVID-19 regulations are met.

Offices that are open are operating with a reduced number of staff in accordance with COVID-19 regulations. This is because if staff in one office are diagnosed with COVID-19 and need to quarantine or self-isolate, there is a back-up team that can take over.

To avoid queues and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, rather visit at a later stage if possible or register for e-Services and do vehicle renewals or account payments online. Please be patient as there are high volumes of online renewals taking place.

If customers need to go into an office, do so as early as possible in the day in case of high volumes.

For motor vehicle licence renewals, there is a 90-day grace period that applies to customers who had to renew their licences between 23 March and 31 May. They have until 29 August 2020 to do so.

The 90-day grace period applies for:

  • Expired driving licence cards
  • Learner’s licences
  • Professional driving permits (PrDPs)
  • Roadworthy certificates
  • Temporary driving licences
  • Vehicle registration and licence renewal discs

In addition, the validity period for the renewal of a motor trade number licence is extended for a further six months from 1 June 2020.

• Motorists who applied for a vehicle licence renewal via e-Services before 26 March 2020 (prior to the national lockdown) do not need to reapply. Please be patient while your Motor Vehicle Registration Licence is delivered to you as the South African Post Office is working through its backlog.
• All vehicle owners who have applied online for the renewal of vehicle licences from 26 March 2020 (during the national lockdown) will need to re-apply online as all these applications have either expired or could not be processed due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The City assures its customers it has taken all the necessary COVID-19 precautions as per the guidance of the Western Cape Government and National Authorities. Customers are urged to adhere to social distancing rules while in a queue.

Before customers may enter a customer facility, a screening process takes place and a maximum of 20 people are allowed into the buildings (increased during rainy weather if required), while social distancing is maintained. Preference is given to senior citizens and customers with disabilities.

Yesterday, 17 June 2020, the City opened its revenue and Motor Vehicle Registration and Licencing offices in Strandfontein and Fish Hoek. Please call ahead of time to check on opening hours if in doubt.
